Passiflora mexicana produces beautiful little flowers with an incredibly intense pungent smell. This great picture by T. Beth Kinsey shows a honey bee (probably Africanized) visiting it, which surprised me as I thought it might be fly pollinated.

A number of other closely related Passiflora such as P. gilbertiana, P. jorullensis and their cross P. 'Sunburst' produce a similar smell. It is variously described as being like a pig sty, mothballs or bad breath. Having grown P. 'Sunburst', I can confirm that the smell is so intense and repellent that it is quite impossible to live with indoors and even outside the smell will carry several yards.

Nevertheless these are beautiful plants with very attractive foliage and are well worth growing.
