This is P. aff colinvauxii with its own flower on the right & the flower from P. colinvauxii on the left for comparison. The flowers are about 1"/28mm across & are both more reflexed than this earlier in the day. The corona filaments of P. aff colinvauxii are darker in the centre & the outer half of the filaments on both these species is usually an almost luminous cream - as seen here, but both also produce some flowers with bright orange filament ends, again with P. aff colinvauxii having a deeper colour. P. aff colinvauxii has a light perfume compared with P. colinvauxii, which has a rich honeysuckle perfume. This is attractive to bees but quickly fades well before the flower closes. Perhaps P. colinvauxii from the Galapagos is a variety of P. aff colinvauxii from Ecuador that has evolved into a separate species. The fruit are surprisingly different. |
