Passiflora edulis fruit from Kenya, Africa.

Purple fruit, very acidic. Widely available in UK, variable in taste and juiciness but at is best is of course terrific with an intense aromatic smell of the tropics. Many selections and also hybrids with the yellow fruited Passiflora edulis flavicarpa. Flavicarpa has bigger fruit and flowers than edulis, a similar taste but possibly less aromatic and more acidic. Flavicarpa is the most widely grown Passiflora fruit commercially worldwide but is rarely seen over here in UK.

  From kenyaweb.com

'There are two main varieties of passion fruit in Kenya which are Passiflora edulis and Passiflora flavicarpa. Passiflora edulis is purple in color when ripe and it is round in shape. Passiflora flavicarpa is yellow when ripe and has a shape similar to that of a banana. Both varieties are green before ripening.'

A puzzle as flavicarpa fruit are round! An African friend of mine however suggests that P. tripartita var. mollissima or similar are grown at altitude in Kenya, which of course produce banana shaped fruit, hence the confusion.
