P. hahnii flower close up

My only Passiflora hahnii flower to date. Very difficult to flower in UK. Will generally not flower in a greenhouse. A very appealing little flower with an amazing deep red waxy looking centre. Lovely peach scent. Buds develop very slowly in UK climate. This one which started in early September 2001 eventually opened December 11th 2001. Dan Southard (USA) has very free flowering hahnii & advised that the waxy centre fits tightly round the androgynophore & has to be forced back to reach the nectar. It may be a tactic to stop ants & other insects drinking all the nectar before the correct pollinator arrives. Probably a large bee, such as the giant carpenter bee or bumble bee pollinates it, which will have the strength to get to the nectar.
