Tacsonias are known for their poor heat tolerance. This is one of our warmest days in summer 2003. The thermometer has been moved from the shade at 30° C/86° F & placed in the pot in the plants usual position in full sun showing 43° C/109.4° F! This plant is quite happy & showing no signs of distress. I think the reasons that it is coping are:- Its roots are cooler in a clay pot than they would be in plastic (especially black which cooks them).
The foliage also stays cooler in a pot with better air circulation than against brickwork. It is very well watered & fed regularly. There is some wind. The sun intensity in UK is lower than in Equador.
We usually have a considerable temperature drop at night. e.g. tonight it is expected to drop to 14° C/57° F. Top |
