Passiflora murucuja

Passiflora murucuja
(Murucuja)
West Indies 1753
Min 4°C 39°F
June-Oct

Passiflora murucuja. Note the upright buds & green fruit which will ripen to blue/black. This particular Passiflora murucuja clone does not self pollinate on its own, (others do) but like a number of other passion flowers will do so if foreign pollen eg P. caerulea or P. Constance Eliott is used. Somehow the foreign pollen triggers pollination but does not make any genetic contribution. The exact mechanism is uncertain. These flowers open in UK at 2.00am, which might suggest moth or bat pollination but their colour, shape & lack of smell would suggest hummingbird more likely.
