Botanical prints Julian Mackenzie of Bernard. J. Shapero Rare Books advises that some botanical prints were hand coloured for the original editions with great accuracy. This work was often done by families who worked off the original artists' paintings by candlelight. The hours were long and the pay poor. Other black & white line drawings however were coloured either in part or all over, either at the time or many years later, purely for decorative purposes, thus the colours shown in any print, especially of the flowers, cannot necessarily be relied upon. In some cases artistic licence may have been used also with regard to leaf shape etc. It also appears that some images were copied from one source to another, sometimes with minor changes. e.g. the two quite similar Passiflora kermesina images. Content As well as old historical prints, this section now includes more recent prints and paintings, pottery, glassware, tattoos and indeed any art form with Passiflora depicted. Please e-mail me to have your art added here. Copyright Almost all images in this section are out of copyright by reason of age or are used with permission. If there is anything that is your Copyright & used without permission please advise & I will remove. Panteek's I highly recommend Panteek's Antique Prints for the purchase of original prints & particularly thank them for their kindness re use of their pictures and some text. Errors.
It can sometimes be difficult to correctly identify the species shown, so any corrections,
comments or additions are especially welcome. |
