This happy family picture shows the nymph stage of a type of scale insect. There are 25 species known in UK. This species sucks the sap of the plant and produces honeydew - a sticky liquid secreted by the scales. The nymphs can move about but later they lose their legs & become sedentary. They are very difficult to treat, especially when they reach adulthood, but there are chemical and organic controls plus biological controls for some species.

I don't worry about them on adult plants outside but treat small indoor plants simply by picking them off using a fine tool from a manicure kit.
