Passiflora Passion flowers scale insects

This happy family picture shows the nymph stage of a type of scale insect. There are 25 species known in UK. This species sucks the sap of the plant and produces honeydew – a sticky liquid secreted by the scales. The nymphs can move about but later they lose their legs & become sedentary. They are very difficult to treat, even with strong blast of water, especially when they reach adulthood. I don’t worry about them on adult Passiflora plants outside but treat small indoor plants simply by picking them off using a fine tool from a manicure kit. There are chemical and organic controls plus biological controls for some species. These include the ‘lady who lunches’ polishing off a scale insect below.
